The Embraer ERJ-145 is part of the Embraer ERJ-145 family. This collection of regional jets is produced by the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer and includes the Embraer ERJ-135, ERJ-140 and ERJ-145, the Legacy business jet and the R-99 military aircraft family. The aircraft described in this article, the ERJ-145, is largest aircraft of the family and is stretched by nearly 12 foot when compared to the -135 series. The aircraft is powered by two Rolls Royce turbofan engines mounted on the aft fuselage section.

The Embraer ERJ-145 was initially launched at the 1989 Paris Airshow and was presented as a turbofan-powered modification of the Embraer EMB-120 "Brasilia". Its design incorporated straight, winglet equipped, wings, wing-mounted engines, a range of approximately 2.500 km and commonality with the earlier EMB-120. By the time engineers started wind-tunnel tests for the proposed aircraft, a new design was being considered that differed significantly from the EMB-120. The new proposed design included 22.3 degrees wings sweep, wing-mounted engines and, again, a range of 2.500 km. This second design showed better performance in wind tunnel tests but still needed some major modifications. The combination of swept wings and wing-mounted engines required an undercarriage which was significantly higher than previous iterations. Before the design was actually finalized, it went through many alternations and it did retain a few of the original influences of the EMB-120 such as the three abreast seating (2+1) configuration.

Eventually, the key features of the production design included rear mounted engines, swept wings without winglets, a T-tail configuration and a range of 2.500 km. At the moment the aircraft was taken into production, the company was seen to be at a disadvantage due to the lost time in bringing the aircraft into service. This lost time was primarily caused by the change in the aircraft's design. Initially, Embraer tend to retain much commonality with the EMB-120 Brasilia which eventually changed dramatically as the engines were place on the aft fuselage and a T-tail configuration was incorporated. Although the aircraft suffered some delay during its design process it sold well thus overcoming the initial setbacks. Through 2006, Embraer delivered a total of 892 aircraft.

Embraer ERJ-145 Family Design
As said earlier, the aircraft has rear-mounted engines, low-mounted swept wings, a T-tailplane and a circular cross section fuselage. The wings are supplied by Gamesa of Spain and are of two-spar design with a third spar to support the landing gear. The ERJ-145XR, or Extra-Long Range, is fitted with winglets in order to decrease drag and improve the overal efficiency of the wing at cruise speed. The fin and tailplane are designed and supplied by ENAER of Chile. The T-tail is made of a aluminum box construction with aluminum leading edges on the tailplane.

The aircraft is flown by a two-man flight deck crew. The instrumentation included in the cockpit includes a HUD, or Head-Up-Display, that gives the aircraft CAT III landing capability. Furthermore, the aircraft has five electronic flight and information system displays, each measuring 20.3 cm x 18 cm, and includes two multi-function displays, two primary flight displays and one In-flight Engine Condition Monitoring System (IECMS). In addition, the aircraft is fitted with a digital avionics suite with dual digital air data computers, dual Attitude Heading Reference System (AHRS), Terrain Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) and a Ground Proximity Warning System (GPWS). There is an option to install a flight management system and global positioning system. The Embraer ERJ-145 family has a Primus 1000 color weather radar and a dual Primus II radio communications suite.

The aircraft can accomodate up to 50 passengers in a three abreast seating configuration. Passengers can enter the aircraft by making use of the airstairs installed at the front port side of the aircraft. Both the cabin and luggage compartments are pressurized and air conditioned by systems supplied by Hamilton Sundstrand and Liebherr Aerospace.

The Embraer ERJ-145 is powered by two Rolls-Royce turbofan engines mounted on pylons on the rear section of the fuselage. These engines are fitted with full authority digital engine control, bleed air and an anti-icing system. The ER, or Extended Range, version of the -145 has the option of being fitted with more powerful AE 3007A1 engines providing slightly more power over the AE 3007A engine. The Long Range version is equipped with Rolls Royce AE 3007A1 engines providing 15% more power than the "A" model. The Extra-Long Range version however, is equipped with high-performance RR AE 3007A1E engines which provide lower Specific Fuel consumption and improved performance in hot and high conditions.

Embraer 145 Family Versions

Embraer ERJ-135ER Extended range version of the baseline -135 model. It is a simple shrink of the ERJ-145 and is used to accomodate a total of 37 passengers. Thirteen less than the -145.
Embraer ERJ-135LR The ERJ-135LR is the Long Range version of the baseline 135 model. It features increased fuel capacity and upgraded engines.
Embraer ERJ-140ER The ERJ-140 is again a simple shrink of the -145 model. It can accomodate a total of 44 passengers. Six less than the -145 model.
Embraer ERJ-140LR The Embraer ERJ-140LR model is the Long Range version of the baseline -140 model. It features increased fuel capacity and upgraded engines.
Embraer ERJ-145STD The ERJ-145STD is the baseline model on which all other variants are based upon.
Embraer ERJ-145EU The ERJ-145EU is a model especially for the European market. It has the same fuel capacity as the -145STD but an increased MTOW of 19.990 kg.

Embraer ERJ-145EP The ERJ-145EP has the same fuel capacity as the ERJ-145ER but has an increased MTOW of 21.990 kg.
Embraer ERJ-145LR The ERJ-145LR is the Long Range version of the baseline ERJ 145, the ERJ-145STD. It features increased fuel capacity and upgraded engines.
Embraer ERJ-145LU The ERJ-145LU has the same fuel capacity as the -145LR but has an increased MTOW of 21.990 kg.
Embraer ERJ-145MK The ERJ-145MK has the same fuel capacity as the -145LR while the MLW and MTOW remained the same compared to the -145STD. MZFW was changed to 17.700 kg.
Embraer ERJ-145XR The ERJ-145XR is the Extra-Long Range version of the -145 family. It features several aerodynamic improvements, winglets, strakes, a ventral fuel tank, increased fuel capacity, increased weight capacity, higher top speed and more powerful engines.
Embraer Legacy The Legacy is the business jet variant and is based on the ERJ-135 version.
